I paint landscapes in oils. My work is figurative. I am enchanted by the deep shadows of the wild woodlands and the light in the clear streams here.
My mentor Neal Welliver put it very well: “You look at everything very hard and then you make it all up.” A painting is a painting, not a photo, not a view. You need to have digested the lessons of Modernism and have a good enough grasp of formal values to make a good painting. This is what I try to do.
